Stepping Blocks Children’s Centre Receive Award for Inclusive Hiring Practices

Stepping Blocks AwardStepping Blocks Children’s Centre is a business within our community that provides services to children of all abilities.  Their philosophy is based on the unconditional acceptance of everyone. This philosophy is also demonstrated through the hiring practices at Stepping Blocks.  Joanne Wilson, the owner, recognizes the value of having a diverse workforce.  Staff members with varied abilities provide positive role models for children and their parents.  Some of these parents may wonder what employment opportunities will be available when their children become adults.  The opportunity to see individuals fully participating in the workforce & gaining professional certifications is empowering.

Joanne has also provided the opportunity for students with special needs at School District 42 to learn about quality childcare through work experience. Stepping Blocks Childcare Centre is inclusive in the services and educational opportunities they provide as well as in the staff they hire.

This is what led two proud, long-term employees at Stepping Blocks with help from an Employment Specialist at posAbilities Employment Service to nominate the company for an award in the area of “Employment” at the 11th Annual MACAI Accessibility Awards in Pitt Meadows.

Both employees play different roles within the team and have been given the opportunity to enhance their skills through professional development and on-site learning.  They are valued as members of the Stepping Blocks team and are happy to have had the chance to demonstrate their skills.  The expectations they are given are high and they strive every shift to meet them.  Sometimes, they require additional support to learn the skills required to meet those expectations.  Joanne and the team at Stepping Blocks welcome any supports they need and they all have the chance to learn from each other.
